Theatre De Maagd was originally a church, located in the historic centre of Bergen op Zoom. Opened in 1829, the Heilige Maagdkerk (Holy Virgin Church) was a catholic church in the “Waterstaatstijl” (Water Management Style), a style that developed when engineers for the Ministr of Water Management created designs for subsidised churches. The style of De Maagd is closely linked to neo-classicism.

Towards the end of the 20th century, De Maagd was not in use as a church anymore and a new destination had to be found. Onno-Greinier / Martien van Goor Architects BV submitted plans for restoration and transformation into a theatre, which were accepted and completed in 1990.

The theatre knows a beautiful harmony between the old and the new, with the original structure of the monumental church is still visible. For example in the absis, now rear-stage, the beautiful wall paintings of Joan Colette are still visible. Combined with modern comfort and stagecraft, De Maagd is a unique location which is host to a wide range of performances.
